Spruce/Pine/Fir (SPF) Mats – "Spruce Mats"
The matting business has evolved organically. A variety of mat products created by necessities such as availability or shortage of alternate materials in a variety of industries, have likewise been tagged with a confusing list of names. You may know wood mats as swamp mats; you may know wood mats as fir mats, oak mats, hybrid mats, cross-laminated timber (CLT) mats, or even bamboo mats. And you may have heard the name spruce mat – but understand that they are not constructed entirely from spruce boards.
Mats manufactured from a blend of spruce, pine and fir softwoods, correctly called SPF mats, are sometimes known simply as spruce mats. They are a low-cost, lighter-duty alternative to hardwood mats. SPF mats are known in the industry as “throw-away mats” and are not recommended for mud-ugly conditions because they tend to splinter and shatter due to their weakness under load, and usually get destroyed during retrieval from mud. However, if all you require is a one-time use from your mats, then spruce mats may be acceptable. We ensure you understand the different mats available, their pros and cons, and their intended application so that you know what you are getting prior to making any commitment. SPF mats are an inexpensive mat but with limitations – don’t be convinced otherwise!
