Plastic Mats – Are They a Specialty Product?
A member of the composite mat family along with fibreglass mats, plastic mats are made of flexible recycled or virgin high-density polyethylene (HDPE) or ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE). Lightweight and manufactured in a large variety of shapes, sizes and thicknesses, there is a plastic mat for virtually any light, medium or heavy-duty access mat application. They are available in different colors and can be quickly made to order.
Plastic mats have several advantages over wood mats, most notably their light weight and flexible nature. Contour-conforming, plastic mats installed over undulating terrain bend and settle into the ground surface, preventing the rocking and misalignment tendencies common with rigid mats used in similar conditions. They are much lighter than rubber matting while sharing some of rubber mating’s durability advantages. They can be interconnected to prevent creep and are patterned and textured for exceptional traction. Their low profile makes plastic mats ideal for pedestrian walkways as the tripping hazard is reduced, especially when brightly-coloured options are used. They are easily cleaned and do not absorb water.
Light and medium-duty portable mats are often made with loops and handles so they can be manually installed and removed by a crew of 2, permitting fast deployment when quick access and removal is needed. Heavy-duty mats are available in several thickness and weights and require machine deployment and retrieval, just like other heavy-duty access mat products.
